“We are in the pediatric hall! Guys, we need to sing as loud as we can!!” whispered mother Santa as she was leading the way into the children’s ward!
The Naji Cherfan Foundation embarked on a Christmas mission on 25 December, touring area hospitals in Lebanon, to celebrate Christmas with patients, families, nurses and doctors. NCF Volunteers teamed up with “La Chorale Des Jeunes” choir and visited St. George, Our Lady of Lebanon, and St. Louis Hospitals respectively.
To say the least, what we thought was a Christmas party, was indeed a Christmas mission. More than one thousand persons were touched that night, as the voices of the choir elevated in hospital halls, rooms and medical departments. More than three thousand prayers were distributed while those divine voices of children and adults filled the quiet halls of hospitals bringing the good news of the birth of Jesus to all present!
Hospitals don’t like to keep people over this holiday. It was really quiet and only the very ill were there. Many patients had family members gathered around them, but many were alone; sick and alone.
All through the night we sang like children, humming those childhoods Christmas harmonies we all know by heart! Our tempo was linked to the ward being visited, very loud when we passed children and whispering low in the ICUs! In all sections, tears mixed with laughter and sighs with profound joy, as families and healthcare providers welcomed Jesus in their hearts. “I saw Jesus in your faces tonight” a lady screamed aloud, “thank you for bringing Christmas to us” a nurse declared. And the more we chanted, the more we heard heartfelt comments, the more the tears ran down our faces and the harder we sang!
We wanted to celebrate Christmas with patients and bring a little peace to their heart, however, one would wonder whether the mission was to touch people’s hearts and celebrate Jesus or to travel within our own hearts and reveal the Jesus within.
